Public Facilities

Farella Braun + Martel's Construction Counseling & Dispute Resolution Group represents public owners, contractors, subcontractors, and design professionals on all types of public works of improvement.  Whether the projects involve university housing or teaching facilities, public schools, prisons and jails, hospitals and medical facilities, laboratory or research facilities, or government buildings and courthouses, our construction attorneys have handled the full range of issues that arise on these or other construction projects.

We counsel and represent clients in connection with seismic-safety upgrades, facility expansions, and related construction of hospital centers and medical facilities.   We are familiar with the additional regulations, approvals and inspections that govern hospital projects, including those of the Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD).  We have been involved in projects pertaining to Kaiser Foundation Hospitals' medical facilities and Mercy Hospital in Sacramento.  Currently, we represent the County of San Mateo in various disputes that have arisen in connection with a five-phased renovation and construction project that replaces the County's aging hospital facility with a state-of-the-art, full service medical facility.

Our construction attorneys also provide services relating to a variety of public facility projects, including those relating to university campuses, school districts, research facilities, prisons, jails and correctional facilities, courthouses, and state office buildings.   We have represented the Regents of the University of California in connection with claims arising out of the design and construction of laboratories, classrooms and housing and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in connection with delay, cost overrun, and design disputes arising from the construction of a laboratory and office center.  We also have worked on construction delay and cost overrun claims relating to the construction of Pelican Bay Prison.  In addition, we have represented the State of California in negotiating and drafting design/build contracts for state office and courthouse buildings.
